Christian Education Report of May 2010 This was a year of challenge and change for team members Jennie Hemborg, Heidi Lindeman, Jan Scheevel, Jean Yale, Gail Gordon, and advisor Pastor Dan Wilkie. As we entered the Church year last June, we faced challenges regarding the needs of the young people in our church... nursery tots, Sunday school kids, and the youth. Blessed with support of the congregation and encouragement from Pastor Sharyl and Pastor Dan, we stepped out of our comfort zone to try ideas to invigorate the support and education of our young people. Youth Group - Nancy Ruspil came forward to coordinate the youth to meet as a group once a month during church service to share faith, support, activities, and God’s presence in their lives. The youth have assisted Pastor Sharyl with the Thanksgiving Service, helped serve the Shrimp Dinner and pancakes at Shrove Tuesday Dinner, and raised $406.04 for the 2010 Souper Bowl of Caring. The committee supported one person’s attendance at La Foret summer camp. Sunday School – The committee worked hard to revitalize the education and care of our young people. The committee took a critical look at the Sunday school program. By suspending it for several months, we had the chance to review the resources required for a Sunday school program including location, time of the classes, efforts of the teachers, and curriculum. Heidi Lindeman worked tirelessly to develop a curriculum and now teaches the class. The goal of Sunday school is to give children knowledge about the world we live in and to show them that many different religions are good and acceptable, that there is no one “right” religion. Sunday school now meets before the service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings in the children’s section of the church Library. Heidi was the coordinator for the Vacation Bible School last June, and last month Vicki Brickey took over that role for this year. Nursery – We are pleased that Katie Van Matre is the new nursery care provider, capably assisted by her mother, Carolyn Van Matre as needed. The nursery has been refurbished with fresh color and new toys to make it an inviting play area for little ones. Kay Ragsdale stepped forward to become the nursery resource manager. Adult Classes - While our focus this year was on the younger people of the church, we also supported some excellent adult learning opportunities including: · Enough! Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity - led by Martha Jones (October and November). · Jesus and Non-Violence - led by Con Pyle (December and January). · An Altar in the World - led by Martha Jones and Chuck Holmgren (April and May). · Sensing the Scriptures - led by Pastor Dan Wilkie (May). The Christian Education committee welcomes the new Church year with enthusiasm. We are going to miss Jennie Hemborg very much! We welcome the new members who have agreed to join us as we continue to think about education for people of all ages. Gail Gordon Christian Education Board Chair
