Annual Report of Mission & Outreach Board May 20, 2007
M&O board members were actively involved in several projects over the past
year. Highlights of our busy year include the following.
1) During the middle of May we sponsored a rummage sale. This event, via
donations of sale items, pre sale sorting and pricing, on-site supervision
during sale and post sale clean-up, probably involved the participation of at
least 70% of the members of our congregation. (Incredible!) The proceeds
($1,750) were sent to Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Dillard, a private African American Educational Institution founded in 1869,
suffered serious Katrina damage. Our donation, along with hundreds of
others, is allowing this historic institution to get back on its feet.
2) The M&O board in August held its 3rd annual Shrimp Boil. Proceeds
from this project ($700) were committed to La Puente, a group located in
Alamosa, Colorado, whose mission is to help the homeless and hungry in
Colorado’s south central San Luis Valley. Besides providing money to
this worthy organization, eight members of the congregation spent three days
in late September at the La Puente facility, helping prepare meals and working
in a potato field as gleaners. Our crew, working in conjunction with a
group of students from Adam’s State College, filled a 1-ton pickup truck.
These potatoes, along with gleaning efforts by other groups, were distributed
to the valley’s migrants, transients, elderly, and families in crises.
3) At Christmas time, our Warm and Fuzzy Tree was packed with mittens,
scarves, hats, underwear and gloves—which were much appreciated by the people
at the Homeless Shelter. The members were also generous in supporting
several women and children who were residents of Latimer House with gifts .
4) We wish to note the special ministry of Bruce Lomillar whose contribution
of scores and scores of stuffed animals have brightened the lives of young
children in Katrina-devastated Biloxi Mississippi, youngsters in the Grand
Junction Valley via the auspices of the Salvation Army, and arriving young
patients at Denver Children’s Hospital.
5) As usual the congregation's contributions for special offerings such as
Neighbor’s-in-Need, One Great Hour of Sharing, Crop Walk and our budgeted OCWM
commitment was more than generous.
Because of your very great generosity the M&O board believes we in a small way
have been able to make our world a better place.
