CROP
Walk
Grand Valley Interfaith Network (GVIN) is once again sponsoring Mesa
County’s annual CROP Walk Sunday October 7, 2007 at 1:30 PM. Walkers will
gather in front of First United Methodist Church at 5th St and White Avenue.
The walk will go south on 5th St to Pitkin to the Day Center where walkers
will have a tour of the building. We will then cross the street in front of
the Day Center and continue on to the Catholic Outreach Soup Kitchen on 1st
Street. After refreshments, walkers will continue north on 1st, cross at the
light on Main, and go to North Ave where we will walk east to 5th St and
back to the Methodist Church. The overall route is a little over a mile.
Eighty percent of the
proceeds go to support Church World Services in their international relief
efforts, and the remaining twenty percent are divided up between Catholic
Outreach and the food banks in Fruita, Grand Junction and Palisade.
Remember, the more we raise, the more we can help.
We need people to walk,
pray for the walkers, and make donations. If you are interested please sign
up with Pam Grout in Pilgrim Hall after church on Sunday.
WE WALK BECAUSE THEY WALK. |

Unsung Heroes – Shepherds
By Pastor Dan Wilkie
This group started with the original Deaconess
movement shortly after the founding of our original church as part of the
church’s ministry to folks who were homebound because of age, illness, or
injury. They operated under this banner for a number of years, visiting the
sick, delivering meals and flowers, or writing cards and notes in honor of
special occasions and life changing events. Eventually, time would catch up
with this group, and they would stop providing this form of ministry on a
formal basis. However, many members and their partners did continue
informally for many years, waiting for another group to be created.
This organized ministry, now known as Shepherding, once again became active
25 or more years ago due to the efforts of Ida Roe and other members of the
congregation. Shepherds today share in this ministry in the same ways: by
working closely with those they visit to determine their needs and wants,
make friendly visits for conversation or light meals, deliver flowers,
cookies, and soup, make phone calls, write cards and notes, and even deliver
special gifts like Valentines Day boxes, Easter Baskets and Christmas
goodies.
The third Wednesday of the month is set aside for a brief supervisory
meeting in the morning at church, where we gather to discuss progress or
concerns that may have arisen during regular visits.
There is an on-going list of folks the Shepherds provide care to, and new
folks are added through pastoral or congregational referrals.
This is a very much appreciated ministry for the folks the Shepherds visit,
and very rewarding for the Shepherds themselves. If you are interested in
this special ministry, (men especially are needed) or know of someone who
needs a Shepherd, please contact Pam Grout at 245-3975, or Pastor Dan Wilkie
at 242-0298. |
